Bells Here is our collection of Akro Bells. Shown left to right are: a crystal basket-weave Bell with tassel, base, and a star-shaped perfume bottle, a milkglass Bell, an ivory (custard) Bell, a light blue Bell, and a crystal fine-rib Bell with bow, base, and three bell-shaped perfume bottles. The first item was made for Lander Distributors of NYC. The last item for Wheatley, also of NYC. The Bells were often sold in a perfume set. The Bells could then be used decoratively as "dinner bells".
bell Shown is an Akro Agate/ Lander clear glass Fine Rib Bell with base, tassel, and a fine ribbed perfume bottle, which contained Gardinia perfume. This was one of the Lander dinner bell perfume sets that we didn't have in our collection. Akro, of course, only made the Bells for these sets.
green bell Shown is a very hard to find Akro Agate dark green Bell. Akro Bells, in their more difficult to find colors, are always a great addition to an Akro collection.
Lander Shown are a pair of Akro Agate milkglass "candlesticks". They were made for the Lander Corporation of NYC to hold a clear glass perfume bottle with its flame red lid, as shown. The perfume the candle bottles contained was called Heaven. These little "candlesticks" were also made in clear glass.
Powder Shown (left to right) is an Akro #647Colonial Lady Powder Jar in light blue, an Akro #323 Ivy Powder Jar in marbleized green, and an Akro #649 Scotty Dog Powder Jar in milkglass. The first and last items held bath powder for Lander Distributor of NYC. The Ivy Powder Jar held bath powder for Darby Cosmetics also of NYC.
scotty Shown is an Akro Agate Scotty Powder Jar made for the Lander Corporation of NYC. This one is made in medium royal blue.
Akro Apples Two Akro #806 Apple Puff Boxes in orange and in crystal. These held Apple Blossom Body Powder sold by Lander Distributors of NYC. The Akro Apples are very desirable to own and are hard to find.
apple Shown is a custard (ivory) Akro Agate Apple Powder Jar made for The Lander Corporation in NYC. Akro's Apple Powder Jars are a nice addition to any Akro collection, though they can be hard to find.
Concentric Ring Our collection of Akro Type 1 and 2 Concentric Ring Powder Jars. The Type 1's were known as "Three Toed Nappies" by Akro employees. The Type 2's never had a glass lid and are much harder to find than the Type 1's. Note the smooth band, just below the rim, that distinguishes the Type 2's. The Type 2's may have held bath sachets, covered by a cardboard lid or wrapped in cellophane and tied with a bow. Existing Akro factory records are unclear about this point, or about which company the Type 2's were made for.
pink Shown is an Akro Agate transparent pink, Type 2, Concentric Ring Powder Jar. The Type 2's can be hard to find; transparent color ones are even more so. This is a delightful addition to our collection.
Ribbed Jars Shown is our collection of solid opaque color Akro Agate Ribbed Powder Jars. The pink and the black ones are difficult to find. The yellow and black one is called a "bumblebee", and was made for Stephen Leeman Products of NYC, to hold Ming Mens Bath Powder.
Ribbed Powder Shown are our two Akro Agate Ribbed Powder Jars in marbleized green and in marbleized orange. These are hard to find.
Crystal Shown are our two transparent color Akro Agate Ribbed Powder Jars, in crystal and in pinkish amber.
Vivaudou Our collection of Akro/Jean Vivaudou items. We have the ladies Orloff set in hand-decorated white, which includes a Powder Puff Jar, the Childrens Orloff sets in both pink (for baby girls) and blue (for baby boys), and the black 'Bergemot' set for men, which also includes a Shaving Mug. Additionally, we also have the Akro/Vivaudou fired-on black over white Apothecary Jar and Mortar & Pestle Jar. These are very hard to find. The two smaller Apothecary Jars were made by Brockway Glass, for Jean Vivaudou, to compliment the Akro/Jean Vivaudou items. We have these smaller Brockway Apothecary Jars in both fired-on white and fired-on black. We're still searching for a pink and a light blue one.
Mexicalli Our collection of Mexicalli Powder Jars that were made by The Akro Agate Company for The Pickwick Cosmetic Corporation of NYC. They held mens shaving powder and, when empty, could be used as cigarette jars. The Sombrero Lids could be used as ashtrays. Shown (left to right), are a nice example of an orange marbleized Mexicalli Jar, a green and a blue marbleized Jar (both with their original labels and both rather hard to find), an oxblood/orange marbleized Jar, and a triple marbleized Jar (green, blue, and orange) with a doubled marbleized Sombrero Lid (green and blue). Double or triple marbleized Mexicalli Jars and Lids are also rather hard to find..
Mex Shown is a solid custard Akro Agate Mexicalli Powder Jar base, with its original label, and a delicately orange marbelized custard Sombrero Lid that we acquired separately. The solid custard Mexicalli's are somewhat hard to find and are the only solid color Mexicallis that Akro ever made.
Treasure Trunk Akro Treasure Trunk Powder Boxes made for Lander Distributors (background) and Pickwick Cosmetic Corp. (foreground), both of NYC
